SO HOW DOES IT WORK THEN?
A 'typical' lesson has 3 parts:
1. A spontaneous converstaion/discussion which usually focuses on the events of your week, or subjects that are
in the news currently. This allows you to practise what you have learned previously (vocabulary, structures, phrases etc),
and it allows me to hear any new weaknesses that you may have and use them as a focus for Part 2. Grammar and vocabulary
that have previously been analysed can be put into practice here, and any misunderstandings can be highlighted and
clarified.
2. The focus now is on a specific grammatical point which will be discussed and explained clearly. Practice questions
are used to aid understanding using real world examples and contexts.
3. To finish, I provide an article from the English speaking press that discusses the subjects that interest you.
By using articles that are interesting to you, your concentration levels are automatically raised; new vocabulary, phrases
and structures that you meet in these texts are more likely to stick in your brain, and memorisation is made easier
because of this. The article is read aloud, and this allows me to correct pronunciation problems, allowing you to speak
more fluently and to be more easily understood in the real world.
FOR EXAM/INTERVIEW PREPARATION
For those of you who need to prepare for an examination or an interview, lessons are much more focused on showing you the necessary steps that you will need to take to succeed. The main focus will be on highlighting what an examiner/interviewer is likely to be expecting from you; what sort of questions you will probably be asked; what strategies you can use to answer these questions confidently and correctly, and most importantly, how you need to present yourself in English in order to achieve your goals, by using phrases, structures and vocabulary that are simple, yet very effective.
To sum things up, my goal is to:
Identify and explain the consistent and common errors that you make, and eliminate them.
Expand your vocabulary of essential words and phrases, and also less common, specialist terms.
Broaden your knowledge and awareness of word groups, Nominalisation and Verbalisation.
Build your confidence, encouraging you to speak and write in English that is interesting, varied, precise and impressive.
If you have passions or interests that you love to talk and write about, and if you want to use these as the basis
for improving your English, or if you need to prepare for an important examination or interview, then please contact me.
Send me an email and tell me about yourself; maybe tell me why you're learning English, or let me know what problems you
are having with the language. If you can send me something that you have written in English - like an essay or dissertation -
then that will be very helpful, but don't worry if not, it's not absolutely necessary!
